135 STEPS UNDER THE LAZIAN SUN / 135 steps under the sun of Lazia

In the summer in Italy, the sun was strong and my skin was burning.

Argentine girls staying at the same hotel asked me if I would like to go to St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City together. It was a time when I moved from Naples to Rome and was getting tired of traveling alone, so It was an honest and very happy proposal.

Rome was able to reach most tourist destinations by bus. Buses are a style of buying coupon tickets, but you can change trains up to two times with one ticket. The crowded bus was chaotic with only unfamiliar tourists. I took a bus to near the Vatican City and walked for a very long time from there.

In the temple of Christ, it was forbidden to expose the shoulders and skin, and everyone brought a jacket and a substitute haori. I didn't even know that, and I wore a summer dress with bare shoulders that I would never wear in Japan. Why didn't anyone tell me because I was embarrassed by my ignorance? It was my first feeling to blame people. Fortunately, there was a rental stall, so I managed to get inside.

St. Peter's Basilica was really beautiful. Many people were praying. I was vaguely thinking about what religion is for everyone here.

After leaving the Vatican, I decided to part with everyone and walk around the city alone. Being alone calms my mind naturally. I was happy when I was invited, but I also like being alone.
It's capricious.

If I was alone, I could adventure freely. As I strolled around without looking at the map, I saw beautiful streets, buildings, and shops, and I fell in love with Rome many times. Things that were too expensive to buy in Japan were a little cheaper. When traveling, the purse string is easy to loosen. Even if I knew it, I couldn't help but go to the shop I liked.

After returning to Japan, the hectic days began again, as if there had been no such relaxing summer.
I left this wallet somewhere with the memories of that summer.

The Italian Sun shone bright enough to burn my skin.

The Argentine girls at my hostel asked me if I wanted to join them to St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City. I had just arrived in Rome from Naples and was getting tired of traveling alone. It was honestly a very refreshing invitation.

In Rome, you can get to most tourist spots via bus. The buses are ticketed, and you can use the same ticket for up to two transfers. Crammed full of tourists that acted as if they'd never ridden on a bus before, it was chaotic. The bus took us to Vatican City and then we walked for what felt like a long time

In the houses of Christ, it is forbidden to show your shoulders or reveal your skin, and everyone brought overwear to cover up. I, on the other hand, didn't know that, and wore a revealing summer dress that I would never wear in Japan, with my shoulders exposed.

Embarrassed with my ignorance, my first instinct was to blame others-"How come no one told me?" Fortunately I was able to borrow a stole, so I managed to get inside.

St. Peter's Basilica was beautiful. There were so many people praying there. I wondered what religion meant to everyone here.

After leaving the Vatican, I parted ways with the others and decided to walk around the city by myself. Being alone naturally made me feel more at ease. I was happy to be invited, but now realise that I also like being alone.

So fickle.

Alone, I was free to venture as far as I wanted. Strolling around without looking at maps, I saw beautiful streets, buildings, and stores, and I fell in love with Rome again and again. Things that are too expensive to buy in Japan were also a little cheaper.

When you are traveling, your wallet easily becomes lighter. Even so, I couldn't help but visit the stores I loved.

After returning to Japan, the days became hectic once again, as if the leisurely summer never existed.

This wallet, along with the memories of that summer, had been left behind.
